Version details
1.20.4 (27-May-2024)
This update is an attempt to "fix" a problem when Chrome and Firefox falsely report 1.20.3 x64 installer as dangerous. No real changes here unfortunately, ony a waste of your and mine time and bandwidth.
Here is what is known so far:
- Chrome and Firefox mark
3dyd64_1.20.3.exe
, an installer of 64-bit version of 3D Youtube Downloader, as malware and prevent downloading it. - This does not happen for installer of 32-bit version and for both batch downloader versions.
- This is caused by Google Safe Browsing. Firefox also uses it.
- VirusTotal report for the installer is clean.
- Identical installer, when downloaded from other sites, does not trigger this error.
- Brave browser does not trigger this error. Brave sends only hash of the downloaded file (details: Safe Browsing in Brave - Downloads), whereas Chrome and Firefox also include metadata like URLs which lead to the file (btw, Brave proxies requests to Google, while Chrome and Firefox send direct requests and disclose your IP). So it looks like Safe Browsing triggers not on the file itself but on combination of the file and its download location.
- Safe Browsing API does not find any threats in this file (gist) - additional confirmation for the previous statement
- Safe Browsing site statuses for
yd.3dyd.com
(main site) anddownload.yd.3dyd.com
(storage for the installers) are green (one, two)
Finally, there is no way to report false positive for files. They provide this only for sites (very basic form actually, with no way to track reported issue).
So this is why version 1.20.4 was made.
For the info (in case it is blocked too), you still can download installer without disabling Safe Browsing. In Brave and Chrome need to click on Show all downloads
and then click on button Keep dangerous file
. In Firefox you just click on blocked download and select Allow download
.
Side note on how to check Google Safe Browsing behavior in browsers. After file is downloaded, browser sends request to Safe Browsing. What data is sent can be inspected this way:
- for Brave: open tab
brave://safe-browsing/#tab-download-protection
. Example output:3dyd64_1.20.3_safebrowsing_brave.log
- for Chrome: open tab
chrome://safe-browsing/#tab-download-protection
. Example output:3dyd64_1.20.3_safebrowsing_chrome.log
- for Firefox: there seems to be no way. And at all, honestly, a disappointment. With all the talking about privacy it sends extra metadata and also discloses your IP (does not proxy requests to Google Safe Browsing).
